Draught Surveys

For over a century, draught surveys have been accepted as an accurate and convenient means of establishing the weight of bulk cargoes. They form the basis for the preparation of bills of lading and determining various charges and port fees.

Archimedes

Draught survey methodology is based upon a principle that is over 2,200 years old, tracing all the way back to Archimedes' Law of Buoyancy. To determining the weight of material loaded onto or discharged from a vessel, one simply measures the amount of water displaced by the vessel.

By finding the initial displacement of water by the vessel (prior to loading or prior to discharge commencing) and then comparing that to the final amount of water displaced (upon the completion of loading or discharge), the weight can be calculated of the material loaded or discharged.

Official Methodology

Our experienced staff conducts draught surveys worldwide, using the official methodology defined in UN code ECE/Energy/19.
