Feed certification (GMP, IFIS, GTP)

Apart from crop management, animal feed production is one of the most important agricultural activities. Some 230 million tonnes of feeding stuffs (excluding roughage) are fed to farmed animals in the EU annually.

Initially, rules concerning animal feed, put in place in the 1970s, emphasised the productivity of livestock farming. Meanwhile, the emphasis has shifted towards the protection of human and animal health, animal welfare and to some extent to environmental protection. Animal feed and food for human consumption can never be viewed in isolation from one another. In addition to safety, the nutritional quality of food is of vital concern within this common quality policy.

GMP
GMP+ stands for GMP Certification Scheme Animal Feed Sector 2006, a quality assurance system for the animal feed chain as a component of overall food safety.

IFIS
The IFSA Feed Ingredient Standard (IFIS) is part of the International Feed Safety Alliance and aims to protect the health of animals and humans.

GTP
The main objectives of Global Trading Practice (GTP) are transparency, commonality and awareness of responsibilities with regard to food safety and consumer health.
