Control Union drives sustainability in motorsport verifying compliance for SRFAS
Control Union Spain is proud to collaborate as an appointed auditing company for Sustainable Racing Fuel Assurance Scheme (SRFAS), an initiative developed by the FIA and Zemo Partnership.
The SRFAS is based on a rigorous verification process that covers three key areas:
- Chain of Custody: Tracking the origin and movement of each Advanced Sustainable Component (ASC) throughout the supply chain, ensuring compliance with strict sustainability criteria and greenhouse gas emissions disclosure.
- Fuel Composition: Verifying the precise composition and traceability of ASCs in the final blended fuel.
- Emissions Performance: Measuring and ensuring that the greenhouse gas emissions of the final fuel meet the FIA’s sustainability objectives.
Motorsport as a driver of sustainable change
The use of 100% sustainable fuels has already begun in various FIA competitions, such as the European Truck Racing Championship (2021) and the World Rally and World Endurance Championships (2022). The next major milestone will be the introduction of these certified fuels in Formula 1 by 2026, with the aim of progressively extending them to all motorsport disciplines in the future.

Under FIA regulations, Formula 1 will use fuels made exclusively from Advanced Sustainable Components, such as non-food biomass, renewable raw materials of non-biological origin, or municipal waste, all of which must meet strict greenhouse gas emission limits.
Impact beyond the track
The FIA’s Sustainable Fuel Certification Programme, supported by the SRFAS, has implications far beyond motorsport. This project demonstrates that the highest standards of quality and technology can coexist with sustainability, paving the way for these fuels to be adopted in the everyday vehicle market.
