About the standard
Offsetting – the purchase of carbon credits – offers them a way to compensate emissions that cannot be avoided. These credits are generated by projects that reduce or avoid emissions elsewhere: carbon offset projects.
There are several standards, each with their own focus and project requirements, that issue carbon credits for achieved emission reductions. In order to assure the quality of those credits, these standards require third-party validation of project plans before implementation, and third-party verification of the realised emission reductions after implementation. We currently offer validation and verification of carbon offset projects under the Plan Vivo standard.
Plan Vivo
The Plan Vivo standard is a relatively small programme but the largest standard for smallholder and community-forestry projects. Plan Vivo certifies land-use projects with emission reduction, social and environmental benefits in poor rural communities. Their projects typically have a community-led approach, working together with smallholder farmers and community members to manage their land more sustainably, reduce emissions and improve people’s livelihoods. The standard is widely recognized for its focus on ethical and fairly-traded climate services. Plan Vivo projects are mainly located in developing countries and fall into the categories of Improved Forest Management, Agricultural Land Management, Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, and Wetlands Restoration and Conservation.
