About the standard
Natural dyes are colorants derived from plants, invertebrates, or minerals. These dyes are environmentally sound and can be grown by organic methods. Nowadays most of the chemicals that are used to produce dyes and chemicals are highly toxic, nonbiodegradable, and not ecofriendly and have potential to cause harm. The Standard has been developed in response to a shift in using natural colorant in the textile industry due to toxic and allergic reactions of synthetic colorants, resulting in the rapidly growing demand for Natural dyes.
Why the standard is important
Eco Dye Standard (EDS) have been developed with the intent to provide a realistic and holistic approach in ensuring natural content in dyes and auxiliaries. The Standard is based on a comprehensive management system approach and provides a framework for manufacturers to assist them to ensure that Natural Dyes are free of harmful substances. The aim of this Standard is to ensure the natural status of colorant from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally responsible manufacturing up to labelling in order to provide a credible assurance to the end consumer.
