What is ISCC PLUS Certification?
The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) system comprises a suite of certifications designed to verify sustainability and traceability in global supply chains.
The ISCC certification scheme began with ISCC EU, which enables you to certify raw materials as sustainable to comply with the latest version of the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED).
The ISCC PLUS certification takes an even broader approach, allowing you to certify the same raw materials outlined by the ISCC EU as well as products destined for food, feed and bio, circular economy products (such as plastics and waste-to-resource solutions), by-products, and recycled materials that would have otherwise gone to landfill. Materials covered by the ISCC PLUS certification include:
- Bio – e.g. corn, canola, sugarcane, cotton
- Bio-circular – e.g. tall oil, used cooking oil (UCO), forestry residues, straw
- Circular (technical) – e.g. mixed plastic waste, end-of-life tires, waste textiles, mine gas
- Renewable-energy-derived – e.g. hydrogen, power-to-x

ISCC PLUS Certification Process and Requirements
From initial registration through to certification, the process of becoming ISCC PLUS Certified comprises three main stages:
- Initial query to Control Union
After contacting us, we send you an application form to gather key details about your business, processes, and sustainability controls. Once we receive your completed application, we send you an offer based on your ISCC PLUS requirements. - Registration
If you choose to accept our offer, a registration form is sent to ISCC PLUS for review. Subsequently, you will receive a unique registration number. This number is vital for scheduling your audit and receiving your ISCC PLUS certificate. - Audit
Once you receive your registration number, we will contact you to arrange the date for your audit. If you have zero non-conformities following your audit, we issue your ISCC PLUS certificate and upload it to the ISCC Hub. ISCC allows 60 days for issuing a certificate; however, we aim to get this to you as soon as possible if you should require it for a tender, work opportunity, etc.
ISCC PLUS Certification Costs
Though there is no set cost for your ISCC PLUS audit, there are important factors that you can consider that will inform your bespoke quotation. The most common factors that influence the cost are:
- Your site – its size and complexity will affect the amount of time required to complete an ISCC PLUS audit
- Your processes – for example, multi-stage processes or processes that carry greater risk will take longer to audit
- Your storage facilities – the scale of your storage and whether materials are segregated will influence the length of time it takes to verify traceability
